THE METEOROLOGIAL SITUATION OF MARDIN
A.The Geological Structure of Mardin :
Mardin stands between 36–55, 38–51 North latitudes and 39–56 , 42-54 East longitudes with an area of 8891 square kilometres. The mountains filling %48 of Mardin area are stated towards East-West and form a large mass 600 metres higher the plain. The elevation is higher than 1000 metres in somewhere. There is not any plant on the mountains generally. Because a large number of it consist of calcareous area, there are cracks and splits. The water of the surface is observed by the cracks and rises up on the plateaus. On the clayey and limestone lands in the highlands of Mardin, Mazıdağı, Derik, Midyat, Savur and Nusaybin it is impossible to come across with oaks. The calcareous parts of the mountains have become plateaus by eroding quickly. These plateaus are covered with laves rising up in somewhere. There are not only Gumus, Cagcag and Savur Streams but also Seyhan and Yesilli Gulzar Streams. The parts of Dicle and Fırat Rivers have formed a hall in the lands of the city. There are Dicle valley and Mardin,Nusaybin plains.
B.The Climatic Structure of Mardin :
It has some qualities similar to the climate of Mediterranean.Summers are quite hot and arid whereas winters are quiet rainy and mild. The high pressure area in winters causes winter months to be cold in Mardin.Because it is both affected by desert climate from south (low pressure of Basra) and the high mountains preventing the cold air masses to arrive in to the region the plains of the city home quite hot summers. It is possible to feel some qualities similar to arid climate in somewhere. It is possible to appraise the climate of Mardinin two shapes, part of plain and part of mountain. The difference between two parts can be determined values of precipitation temperature and breeze. While the summers are quiet hot in the part of the plain, winters are mild and rainy. It is possible to impose a little and temporary snow. And in the mountains summers are colder than the plain and the winters are quiet windy, rainy and snowy.
Mardin, its provinces and neighbour cities show an interesting difference between the rate of wind and rain ; and moisture, and the decrease of their values of temperatures.
